IHRT Rises 3.0% After Gen Z Research Flags Radio’s Comeback

Finvera Editorial Team··move recap

iHeartMedia (IHRT) shared new consumer research on Gen Z’s audio habits on Aug 19, 2026, and the stock rose 3.0% by the end of the day.

What iHeartMedia announced

iHeartMedia unveiled new consumer research fielded through Critical Mass Media focused on Gen Z’s relationship with audio — and it leaned into a headline takeaway: broadcast radio is proving more resilient with younger audiences than many assume. Citing Nielsen, the company said broadcast radio reaches 90 percent of teenagers (13–19) monthly. It also pointed to radio’s share of Gen Z’s ad-supported audio time at 47 percent.

The company framed the results around a “community and belonging” angle, arguing that teens may be gravitating toward radio’s shared experience. iHeartMedia’s President of Insights, Lainie Fertick, said the data suggests teenagers value the “safety and anonymity” of radio versus the pressure of presenting themselves online.

What it means for iHeartMedia

For iHeartMedia, the research is a marketing message as much as a data drop: it supports the case that broadcast radio remains a meaningful channel for reaching younger listeners. If radio is still capturing a large slice of Gen Z’s ad-supported listening time, that could help iHeartMedia position its broadcast footprint as relevant — not just legacy.

The study’s social-media-pressure findings also give iHeartMedia a narrative to sell: radio as a lower-stakes, “no judgment” environment. That framing could bolster how the company pitches audio campaigns to advertisers trying to connect with teens without relying solely on social platforms.

More broadly, highlighting radio’s reach alongside iHeartMedia’s podcast leadership helps the company argue it can cover multiple parts of the audio market — from broadcast to podcasts — with Gen Z in the mix.
