IONQ Falls 4.0% After Clarifying $28M DARPA Extension

Finvera Editorial Team··move recap

IonQ (NYSE: IONQ) clarified details around a DARPA contract extension on Aug 6, 2026, and the stock fell 4.0% on the day.

What IonQ announced

IonQ said it has been awarded a $28 million contract extension under the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) It’s About Time program, with an additional option of $30 million that has not been exercised. The work is focused on advancing scalable production capabilities for its Evergreen-05 optical atomic clocks and delivering 125 units to U.S. government customers.

The company framed the $28 million award as a modification to an existing DARPA agreement. That modification covers manufacturing development and 25 Evergreen-05 clocks. If the additional $30 million option is exercised, it would cover another 100 clocks, bringing the combined potential value to up to $58 million.

IonQ also highlighted performance details for the Evergreen-05, describing it as a compact, fully integrated optical atomic clock with a 5-liter, shoe box-sized form factor. The clocks are positioned for mission-critical uses such as radar, secure communications, and precision geolocation.

What it means for IonQ

The update underscores that this is follow-on work tied to an existing DARPA relationship, rather than a brand-new program start. The immediate $28 million modification could help support manufacturing development, which is often a key hurdle for specialized hardware moving from prototypes to repeatable production.

The unexercised $30 million option matters because it signals potential additional demand, but it’s still conditional. If exercised, it could expand the scope from 25 clocks to a larger 125-unit delivery, which could further validate IonQ’s ability to scale the Evergreen-05 platform for government customers.

More broadly, the announcement positions IonQ’s Vector Atomic-derived clock technology as a practical, deployable product line alongside its quantum-related ambitions.
